Final Project: Visual Analysis

INSTRUCTIONS

PRACTICAL

1. Visual Analysis

Our final project for this module is to do a visual analysis of a visual narrative, it can be anything from posters to illustrations. Since I enjoy watching painting breakdowns, why don't I do one for this project? I am the kind of person that prefer simplicty, I appreciate little things so much. When it comes to photography, I love taking street pics. Capturing the reality of people walking here and there, talking to strangers, dancing in the middle of the streets, having lunch together, helping each other makes me happy. These moments are priceless, because those people in the pictures didn't realize that they were actually making memories. Same thing when it comes to art movement, I prefer realism.

One place where I can meet a lot of people doing various kind of activities in modesty is the traditional market or better known as pasar. Pasar has impacted my life in many different ways as it was my childhood. I used to live in an old town area where the largest pasar in the city is located. Have lived there for at least 13 years since I was born, there were too
many memories that I can't really remember most of them.

I also took some pictures when I was visiting the pasar recently. Here is some of them.

fig 1.1 pictures I took at the pasar recently

I also did a shoot there last year as an awareness for the covid-19 outbreak.

fig 1.2 "A Message From Bali" covid-19 awareness video

For the visual analysis, I decided to explore this painting of a pasar in Bali that is hanging in my parents house's living room.

fig 1.3 the "pasar" painting hung in the living room

fig 1.4 scanned version of the painting

Sadly, I have no clue whos artwork is this. I tried to do multiple image searches through Google but can't seem to find the exact same painting. These so called "visually similar images" don't even look visually similar with the painting I am searching for.

fig 1.5 google image searching results

After a while, I finally found some similar paintings displayed in marketplaces like shopee and bukalapak.

fig 1.6 a similar painting found in shopee

fig 1.7 a similar painting found in bukalapak

I am pretty sure that the one from bukalapak was painted by the same artist as mine, as you can see both of them have the same painting techniques applied. Nevertheless, I am still unable to get any information about the painting I am about to analyze.

Observation

This painting is showing a landscape of a traditional market in Bali, Indonesia, we can see that from the obvious gate design on the back. The colours are dominated by warm tones like yellow, green and brown with a touch of cyan and magenta in the details. I really like the colour combination here, colourful but not too much. There is a variety of line, shape and texture used to produce the whole masterpiece. The painting itself is showing an everyday situation in the pasar. There are people with similar backgrounds walking around carrying their goods, various stalls providing different qualities and of course regular human beings who come by to search for their needs. There is a huge tree in the middle of the scenery as well which looks a lot like a banyan tree. The artist remained the artwork borderless to let the viewers know that there is a lot more outside the frame. Overall, it is a pretty crowded painting with a strong intention.

Analysis

Looking at the banyan tree that is placed in the middle of the painting, this artwork is symmetrically balanced. Talking about the visual plane, this painting has a foreground, background, and multiple middlegrounds. The highlights in the background and the shadows in the foreground create a beautiful contrast. This painting is emphasized right at the tree trunk and the stall in front of it as they have a deeper shadow compared to the rest. A bunch of repetition were applied for different elements of the painting, from the people figures to the strokes that represent nature which creates unity. Moreover, we can see that the people is moving in two directions, the tree branches and leaves are pointing towards the ground and the two penjor in front of the gate is facing each other. These give a sense of movement. Lastly, everything in this painting is very well wrapped together that we can feel the harmony within all the colours, elements and compositions.

Interpretation

Realism or sometimes also known as naturalism is an art movement of representing an artwork or subject matter truthfully, precise and accurate as it is. Realism refers to a mid nineteenth century artistic movement characterised by subjects painted from everyday life in a realistic manner, or generally also used to describe artworks painted in a photographic way. The term realism was founded by a French novelist, Champfleury in the 1840s. Later, the term realism in art was exemplified in the work of a painter, Gustav Courbet. Going deeper into the painting itself, it is a portray of a scene in the Island of Gods, Bali, Indonesia. This painting was done in a Traditional Kamasan Style. Between 1920 to 1930, Balinese painting was limited to religious matters revolving on serialized stories about religion or classical Hindu-Bhudda culture. It was used as display for temples or collections by local rulers. The paintings characteristics are busy and crowded textures along with a complete story from beginning to end. The artist also managed to include a strong Balinese architectural principle to make his or her intention clear to the viewers. The split gate shown in the painting is called as Candi Bentar, this type of gate is often used in a nista mandala. Nista Mandala is the outer zone that connects a pura compound with the outer realm and the entrance to the temple directly. Based on this, we can conclude that there is a pura behind the pasar pictured in the painting. Moving on, the banyan tree is also one of the most important element here. In Hindu mythology, this tree symbolizes longevity and is believed to provide the fulfillment of wishes and material gains. Therefore, the artist chose warm colours for his or her painting not without reason. Warm tone has the power of creating a happy and cozy atmosphere that is inviting. These colours can deliver the feelings of excitement and passion which represent the merchants hard work and integration.

2. Visual Research

Based on the analysis I did, I want to create something that can represent my hometown as well. I wanted to challenge myself on applying the similar design principles to my artwork with a completely different art style.

Lately, I spent most of my time listening to music as it is the only thing that keeps me sane. Here is one of my favourite artist, Surfaces. They have the ability to make songs "feel good" so whenever you are upset, just listen to them and I promise you will feel better. Surfaces has NO bad songs but yet so underrated. Well, sometimes we just gotta keep a "good stuff" to ourselves because people who do not appreciate it enough do exist and they might just simply ruin everything. Besides their songs, I also get inspired a lot by their album covers. They are all so aesthetically pleasing and I am just obsessed with all the colours and graphics. Therefore, I want to use them as my references for the final project.

fig 2.1 references: surfaces album covers

3. Idea Exploration

I searched for pictures that represent Bali and the Balinese culture and decided to use these three elements; the Candi Bentar, penjor, and the people wearing our traditional clothing also known as kebaya while carrying offerings on their heads.

fig 3.1 elements that I want to input in my design work

4. Progress

I started off by sketching the gate in the middle of the canvas to create a balance.

fig 4.1 rough sketch

Then I immediately jump to colouring with the colour palette inspired by Surfaces' album covers.

fig 4.2 colouring progress

fig 4.3 final design outcome.jpg

fig 4.4 final design outcome.pdf

This artwork I created is to represent the beauty of Bali and its very own culture. Even though I am not a Hindu, I really admire the culture of my hometown. The artwork is basically showing a Balinese lady in a Balinese traditional kebaya walking towards a gate with offerings on her head in a bright sunny evening.

I tried to apply the similar design principles as the painting I analyzed on part 1 and here is the result. I intentionally put the split gate in the center to balance the artwork, following with the 2 penjor in front of each side of the gate. There is a background (skies), mid-grounds (split gate and penjor) and foreground (the balinese lady). The mid-grounds and foreground are in silhouette to create a contrast with the background. From the directions of the two penjor, you can see that there are movements.
There are repetition of shapes in the artwork too which is quite obvious. What different is that the colours I used are a mix of cool and warm tones. Moreover, I happened to add textures to the entire design with the oil pastel brush in Procreate. Finally, I decided to give some shadow effects to make the scene more alive.

REFLECTION

I am pretty satisfied with the result as this is the first time I am doing this kind of art style. I got to explore with different brushes that I do not usually use and it was a lot of fun. My mom said the two penjor look kind of stiff and the sun should be more orange-ish, well I did try to fix them but i still prefer this one. I am happy to be able to express Bali through my work. This island was, is, and will forever be my home. No matter how far I am going, how long does it take, I will always find my way back. So much love for Bali and all the people in it, you know who you are.

FINAL REFLECTION

I stopped to draw when I enter high school and have always wanted to go back to drawing ever since but I always feel like I do not have the time. However, this module has helped me to realizing it. No matter I have the time or not, I have to draw because it has become my responsibility now.

Not gonna lie, I have learned so much from the module and Dr. Charles his self. Each of the exercises has challenged me in many different ways and triggered my creativity. I always thought I am a creative person, but now I am not sure anymore. It was really hard to come up with an idea when we were assigned a specific design principle to apply in our work. For example, when I am doing the repetition exercise, I cannot seem to create something emphasizing on the repetition itself. But later on when I am assigned to another exercise, I realize that I created a lot of repetition on my work. Sometimes the way our brain works is just so weird. It tends to overthink everything when actually we can do better if we are relaxed.

I also learned how to paint because of this module and it makes me really happy. Even though I am still very amateur in this field but at least I can finally paint something that my future self might be proud of.

My favourite thing from this module is the weekly Dr. Charles's motivational talk. He has no idea how much it means to me. I was going through a tough phase right after the semester started. I have been feeling really lost and empty but his words have helped me a lot to keep going. Dr. Charles once said, "It is gonna get tough, nothing is going to be easy, but tell yourself that you are awesome and you will get through it." I really need to hear that. Thank you so much.

Seeing my classmates work always makes me feel like I do not belong here. Is it that they are just too good or I am just not good enough? Looking back at my submissions for the exercises and projects, I always ask my self, "why on earth did I do that?" Wait, does this mean that I have improved so I can have this thought? I am pretty sure that I thought my submissions were okay, but not anymore.

One thing I want to change on myself is probably my professional procrastinating skills, I no longer want to be professional at it. I always finish my assignments last minute when I know if I start earlier I can provide a better result. Hopefully, I am able to control it next semester!

Last word, thank you Dr. Charles for guiding me these past 3 months. It was a hell of fun journey. You are a great teacher and I hope we can meet again some time in the future!

Project 2: Sense of Place

1. Visual Research:

fig 1.1 sense of place art references from pinterest

2. Idea Exploration:

I wanted to work on something related to home as it is where my heart belongs to. Wherever I go, no matter how far, I will always come back. Also, home is sometimes the people. There are people that feels like home, you feel safe just by simply being around them. For me, those people are my family and my close friends. Talking about the sense of place, I wanted to focus on the places that feel like home to me.

fig 2.1 my first home since I was born until I turned 12

fig 2.2 my home when I live alone abroad for the first time

fig 2.3 my current home

I decided to go with my current home since it is the present. I moved here one day before I entered high school due to an internal family drama. However, I think it was one of the best decision we have ever made and I noticed a lot of growth ever since. I became more aware and expressive with the things I want to do and things that make me happy. Basically, I went through a transition from being an innocent kid, a cheerful teenager to a stressful adult haunted by deadlines here in this house.

3. Idea Visualization:

I actually attempted on recording a timelapse for this painting process but my camera ran out of battery in the middle of it so I only have these 2 work in progress shots.

fig 3.1 sketching 05/06/21

fig 3.2 started painting 05/06/21

fig 3.3 mom made me a strawberry smoothies <3 05/06/21

I did not paint it exactly the same as the original scene since it gets dark already and I forgot to take any picture of it lmao. Hence, I cannot really see the details at night so I just simplify the scenery. I put the word farewell on it, because I was really sad when doing this painting that I literally cried after. Writing this makes me cringe so much hahaha. I am okay now, no worries!

fig 1.4 final sense of place painting.jpg  05/06/21

fig 1.5 final sense of place painting.pdf  05/06/21

It is a very simple painting of the windows in my current home from the outside point of view. All the plants were planted by my mom, it is some kind of her hobby. They are all becoming so beautiful which makes it my favourite spot to take pictures of literally anything. Yep, I use them as a background when taking pictures of another objects most of the time hahahah. This area receives a direct sunlight as well so the lighting is pretty nice which I freaking loveee! If you see the original picture in fig 2.3, you may or may not notice that there is a kitchen at the right side of the windows where my mom is spending most of her time at. She loves to cook and she cooks the best food. This house means a lot to her and I can see that she is a lot happier after we moved in. It was one of the reason why I decided to paint this certain space. The best feeling in the whole world is to be able to see your loved ones happy, especially your mom. My mom is the love of my life, I aspire to be as strong and as multitalented as her when I grew up.

REFLECTION

Surprisingly, I kinda like how it turned out. I love warm tones and I think the colours here are very well blended comparing to the painting I did for project 1. The only thing disturbing is the word "farewell" on it, I lowkey wish I did not put it there hahahah. However, it is not that bad. It still looks good. If I am recreating this painting in the future, I might add more details on the plants.

Design Principles: Project 1 - Self-Portrait

12.5.2021 - 19.5.2021 (Week 7 - Week 8)

Project 1: Self-Portrait

LECTURES

Week 7: Self-portrait is a self-presentation, a visual depiction of the self. The word "self" itself can be defined by how others see me based on my physical traits and personality, how I see myself, my experiences, my interests, or even my thoughts.

INSTRUCTIONS

PRACTICAL

Project 1: Self-Portrait

Visual Research:

fig 1.1 self-portrait art references I found on pinterest

Idea Exploration:

I did not really explore various ideas for this project since I just went with my first attempt. When I heard the word "self-portrait", I just simply drew my own face on a A4 watercolour paper. I have never drawn myself in a realistic style before but surprisingly my sketch turned out to look very much like me. I started by drawing my face, using a photo of mine taken a while ago as a reference. Then, I fill all the blank spaces with things that I love or enjoy.

fig 1.2 my sketch progress

Moving on, it is time to shower this masterpiece with colours! Since I just bought a new gouache set and one of my new year resolutions is to be able to paint, so I decided to use this medium for project 1. Well, this is just how reckless I am. Based on the previous exercises, everybody knew that I cannot paint at all. And now when I have the chance to use any medium I want, I chose gouache. No offense but this decision I made should receive an extra 10 points though.

I was so scared that I might 90% ruin the whole sketch. But if I do not try, I will never know. I started to paint all the details in the background from left to right. As I paint, I feel like I am getting a lot better at it. Compared to the previous exercises I did, I can say my painting skill has improved so much. I did not do any practicing other than completing the exercises from this module and somehow I just claimed the ability overnight. Damn, thank you so much Dr. Charles for all the deadlines that forced me to paint, being able to do it is like a dream comes true!

fig 1.3 painting with gouache progress

My favourite part is the Nintendo! I really like the colour and the details on it. The hardest part was the face obviously, just look at how the facial features completely changed to somebody elses hahahah. The one without eyebrows still look like me though! Another one that was quite challenging is the camera, it was pretty hard to blend the colour together and still showing the little details.

fig 1.4 final self-portrait in pdf

My idea is basically just me and things I love. Tamagotchi and Nintendo are my childhood, I grew up with them. The game showed on the Nintendo screen is Harvest Moon, my all time favourite game from the console. I really like the details I put here as I mentioned previously. Pencil, scissors, brush and paint symbolize art and crafts which will always be my no.1 activity. Camera, because I am into photography. I love capturing moments, every moment exactly. People change, memories dont. I just love it when I look back at old photographs, realizing how fast has the night changed, how happy those days were and how we are not there anymore. Also, I am really into film camera lately. The feeling you get when the film is finally developed, seeing pictures you do not remember taking, it is priceless. Besides photography, I am also interested in filmography, that is why there is a film slate illustration as well. A Harry Potter book! Do not ever call yourself a potterhead if you have NEVER READ THE BOOKS yet, they are way way way better than the movies!! At this point, you are probably wondering why is there a lemon and an avocado tucked in. I honestly do not know what came on my mind, just simply love both fruits hahahah. Last but not least, I set up a night sky with full of stars in the background. I love the stars so much that sometimes I talk to them when I feel alone, no one can literally understands me like they do. I am currently going through a heavy phase in my life, where I have to let go of someone who used to be there for me in the past 2 years. We watched the stars when we first went out together, and watched the stars when we last met each other. The stars have been the silent witnesses of our first meet and last good bye. There are clouds as well, I put this intentionally. During daytime, I love to watch at the clouds moving. I feel relaxed, my soul is freed. It makes me believe that everything is possible. I just feel connected with the skies so much, have been under them on every phase of my life since I first came to earth, pretty sure that they know myself more than I do. When I miss someone, I look at the sky and feel closer to the person. No matter how many miles apart, at least we are under the same sky, and that is enough for me.

REFLECTION

This project is supposed to be harder than the exercises I have done previously since it worths up to 15% mark, but surprisingly I think I did best on this one. I have always wanted to learn how to paint, it is one of my new year resolutions. I doubted myself that I might ruin my own work like how it has always happen before, but hey take the risk or lose the chance. Well, I prefer regret doing things than not doing things. Sometimes we just have to care less about what might happen. Instead of worrying to fail, enjoy the process because what if things eventually work out?

Exercises

LECTURES

Week 1: At first, I had the least interest towards this class because I personally don't really enjoy learning theory. But turns out the lecturer is very nice and friendly, Dr. Charles delivered his lecture in a fun way which made the class ten times more interesting. Besides, I somehow managed to understand what he is trying to explain in the first week of class! He also gave us the freedom to do our E-Portofolio as creative as we want it to be, is it safe to say that I like this class already?

Today, we are introduced about the design elements. First, there are conceptual elements, the basic elements that create a concept or illusion inside our mind. The four conceptual elements are:

1. Point or Dot  •
2. Line —
3. Plane
4. Volume

To objectify that concept and illusion we can add some characteristics, which also known as the visual elements:

1. Shape
2. Size
3. Colour
4. Value or Tone
5. Texture

There are also relational elements, the internal relationship between the visual elements. What we perceive and feel from how one element is related to another. The relational elements are:

1. Direction
2. Position
3. Space
4. Gravity

Lastly, there are practical elements, to observe and analyse what are the meaning and purpose behind a design is made.

On Friday, we had a recorded lecture from Dr. Jinchi about design principlescontrast and gestalt theory through YouTube Premiere. "If the elements were ingredients, than the principles are the recipes." By only hearing this single sentence, we can easily understand what design principles are. The 7 design principles that were mentioned are:

1. Emphasis
2. Balance
3. Contrast
4. Repetition
5. Movement
6. Harmony
7. Unity

Contrast refers to differences is values, colours, textures, shapes, and other elements. It creates visual excitement and interest. However, gestalt theory is about understanding how design works. There are 5 principles of the gestalt theory:

1. Figure-Ground
2. Similarity
3. Proximity
4. Continuity
5. Closure

I still have to explore deeper about this topic though, I think it is important for a design student to understand at least the basic of design principles.

Week 2: Dr. Charles continued to talk about the contrast and gestalt theory. He said, "gestalt is not about 'we' showing the lines but 'our mind' seeing the lines." We were explained further about the different type of principles applied in the theory. Later, some of my classmates are showing Dr. Charles their contrast and gestalt exercise sketches to get their feedbacks, however I haven't prepared anything yet since I just knew about the assignment the night before. Turns out there is something wrong with the Google Classroom which made me and some other friends didn't receive the information.

Week 3: Today, Dr. Charles talked about our next exercise, balance and emphasis. Balance is the distribution of visual weight while emphasis is creating a focal point. A design can be emphasizes by shape, colour or form of unity. I remember one of my classmate asked what is the difference between emphasis and contrast, and it was answered very clearly by Dr. Charles, "emphasis talks about what is more important while contrast talks about what is different." We also got another explanation about the golden ratio and rule of thirds which we have learnt a bit from DPI class. Dr. Charles even showed us how to create the golden ratio manually in Adobe app.

Week 4: This week, Dr. Charles answered some of the students' questions about understanding the repetition and movement in design principles. During the second half of the session, he visited some of our blogs to give a verbal feedback on our second exercise. I saw my classmates' work are so advanced, it is like they own the PRO version and I own the LITE version, or probably BETA. Even though I can't really draw well, seeing their work made me want to do 'more' in future exercises.

PRACTICAL

Week 1: Further into the session, Mr. Charles suggests us to have our own sketchbook, it can be either physical or digital, or both. I have a bunch of sketchbooks, but almost all of them are filled in. So, I am thinking to make a new one once I have collected all the materials I am going to need (will update about it later in this post). Actually, I haven't draw on a physical sketchbook for quite a long time. I used to do it 24/7 in middle school, highly regret that I stopped. My drawing skills suck now, but I guess it is not to late to start over.

At the end of the class, we did an icebreaker. Mr. Charles wants us to draw our faces on a piece of paper. I didn't even know what to draw so this is what I came up with (screenshotted this from the session recording because I accidentally destroyed the drawing). It doesn't even look like me since it has a pointed chin, I am far from that. Also, can you see that the face shape is not symmetrical? Not gonna lie, it looks like a fail product.

fig. 1.1 me with a so-not-me portrait of me

I saw Mr. Charles did a one line drawing of his face, and I have always wanted to learn how to do it. So straight after the class, I scribbled through my sketchbook, trying to do the one line drawing. I think it is not too bad for my first attempt, and I am willing to do more of them in the future!

EXERCISES

Exercise 1: Contrast and Gestalt

Contrast

I did my sketch straight after the class, and this is what first popped up in my mind when thinking about the colour black and white.

fig 2.1 brief sketches

I began my visual research afterwards, and found this piece. It is called as "The Vanishing Half", very interesting. I think I can make my previous sketch to work this way.

figure 2.2 contrast visual research - The Vanishing Half by Brit Bennett

It didn't took me long to create the final work for the contrast exercise, but I am not satisifed with the result. I think it is a bit too basic and cliche, should have think of a more unexpected and mindblowing concept.

fig 2.3 final sketch

Gestalt

For gestalt, I found this really clever artwork. If you look from distance, it isn't just a picture of birds. The face and the elements around it somehow remind me of Maleficent. Unfortunately, I can't seem to find the name of the artwork and the artist. I saw so many people reposting this on Pinterest with different colour scheme, they should have credit the real artist though.

fig 2.4 gestalt visual research

It took me awhile to sketch for gestalt, but then I got this idea when I'm thinking about an idea. Idea is often symbolized as a light bulb, so I decided to combine it with a human facial skeleton. As the shapes of both have similarity, it wasn't too hard to picture them together. I personally really like how it turned out, I think the sketch is very nicely done.

fig. 2.5 sketch for gestalt

This is when I first try to cut and paste the black and white paper. I kind of regret designing this kind of artwork for the exercise because it has some details that aren't easy to be cut. Especially, the light bulb wire. I am not good at using a cutter, always ended up cutting myself. The shape also won't look like how I expected it to be, it doesn't even look like a skull. I realized that this exercise is not that simple.

fig 2.6 first cut and paste

I did my second attempt, this time I trace and cut more carefully to make it as similar as possible to the sketch I did. It's not that bad, even though I still think the sketch is way better. I can't make everything to be exactly the same, but I have tried my best. Really hoping that Dr. Charles will appreciate it.

fig. 2.7 gestalt final

contrast and gestalt final in PDF

behind the work: I forgot to take pictures before and during the progress, but here is after all the mess hahahah. One thing to be kept in mind, I need to find a proper glue stick for future projects! A scented glue stick is nice but it won't apply very well. By the way, I am using all scrap paper for this project, except for the black. Just never throw away things that you can still reuse, it is one of the little things that can help to save the planet!

fig 2.8 aftermath

Exercise 2: Emphasis and Balance

Dr. Charles wants us to create one design for each emphasis and balance using markers or coloured pencils. I did my visual research first, to understand exactly how does the principles work and to find inspirations in getting started.

Emphasis

fig 3.1 emphasis visual research - art by Sandra Chevrier

This artwork is the first one that caught my eyes when I am searching for emphasis and I am thinking to make a similar one.  I tried to draw a portrait of Cha Eun Woo but later I am afraid to ruin the whole drawing since I kind of like the sketch I made.

fig 3.2 first sketch

This is my second idea, red tullips with one unbloomed as the emphasis. Most people create emphasis by using a different colour in one of the object, but I wanted to come up with another idea so here is it.

fig 3.3 reference

fig. 3.4 progress

fig 3.5 first sketch result

I don't know why but I hate it very much, so I decided to remake one with the opposite concept. This time I am going to make the bloom flower as the emphasis. Besides, I am using different medium to achieve better visual.

fig 3.6 second attempt result

I really like how this one turned out, especially the colours. But later, when I asked for Dr. Charles feedback, he said the emphasis is there but not strong enough. He also mentioned the word "grapes" when he was giving feedback for my balance exercise (will go back to this later in the balance section), and that gives me the idea for my final emphasis artwork!

fig 3.7 reference
fig 3.8 progress

fig 3.9 final result for emphasis

fig 3.10 unscanned version

I am amazed by how this one turned out! So happy that I discovered a new art style while working on it. I didn't do any sketching beforehand, just playing around with my markers. The key to do it is apply it on a watercolour designed paper and tadaaa! As you can see the emphasis here is the lost green grapefruit, I really like the unscanned version so I can't help to include it here as well.

Balance

Moving on, let's work for the balance. This one is much harder in my opinion. I found this contemporary artwork on Pinterest, and it was a love at first sight!

fig 3.11 balance visual research (

No, I didn't do it based on my visual research, I love to go far from it hahaha. My first idea wasn't approved, Dr. Charles said my object is a group of two. Other than that, two cherries together still need much evaluation whether it is balanced or not. He also made an example, "if I have a bunch of grapes, which means they are grouped, then what am I balancing?" (p.s. this is what I meant when I say Dr. Charles gave me the idea for my final emphasis artwork).

I tried to think of another idea, and somehow came up with this. I thought it is balanced already but Dr. Charles didn't. He showed me how the windows here aren't balanced and asymmetrical. I really did not pay much attention to the details.

fig 3.14 second balance attempt

I got no choice but to think of another concept (again). Here to an extremely random one, at least I finally got my lecturer approval! I drew two ice cream cones with two different shapes and make them face upside down towards each other to give the balance composition. Very lucky that I made it symmetrical without doing any sketches beforehand. I kind of ruined the strawberry ice cream later though, accidentally added too much unnecessary details on it while trying to add a background. Anyways, still love how it turned out!

Exercise 3: Repetition and Movement

This week's exercise, the lecturer wants us to apply the design principles; repetition and movement in our artwork. The medium we can use for this exercise is between watercolours and crayons.

Repetition

I think repetition is easier to apply compared to other principles because I noticed that 99% of artworks that exist do own it. I also found quiet a lot of interesting repetition art from Pinterest.

fig 4.1 repetition visual research (my saved board on pinterest)

I really like the city buildings ones so I tried to recreate (a worse version of it) it during the practical session. It is before I know that our medium for this exercise is no longer markers.

fig 4.2 first attempt

After Dr. Charles said that we have to use watercolour, I did another similar one. However, I only have one brush that is very old and frayed, so the outline looks very messy and it basically ruined everything. I should probably buy a new brush asap:)

fig 4.3 second attempt

Then I tried to make a repetition of rainbows but later I think it is too simple.

fig 4.4 second attempt

Finally, this is my final work for repetition. The undried version of this makes the objects look 3 dimensional which I love it. I really like how it turned out but not that satisfied because I know that I can do better than this. Well, we were assigned about the assignment 2 days before the submission date. I know two days is more than enough to finish this exercise but that is if we don't have any other things to do outside school.

I want to try making more like what is seen on my Pinterest board, I will update them here later once I have got the chance to do it.

additional artworks:

I did some sketches during the weekend and I kinda like this one. Altough, it is so basic but it somehow makes me smile so I might just put it here. However, I used a drawing pen to do the eyes and mouth, not letting my brush ruin my work for the 1926255th time.

fig 4.7 another repetition practice

I just realized that I actually used a lot of repetition in my previous work. These are some designs that I made for my small shop. I don't know why it is so hard for me to come up with ideas when I have to remember specifically the principle that I have to apply. But when I don't think about it, I can unintentionally apply pretty well.

Movement

Movement is more tricky in my opinion, I don't really find many movement art that I like besides these:

fig 4.6 movement visual research

I tried to recreate the second picture but my 5 year-old little sister said it doesn't look like water.

fig 4.7 recreation attempt

The next one is inspired by the first artwork, the movement of human body. I apply different colour to each to give different moods, seeing this kinda reminds me of 'Inside Out'?

fig 4.8 movement progress

I did another random strokes on separate paper, using pretty much the same colour palette as my repetition final work.

fig 4.9 random strokes progress

fig 4.10 random strokes result

Since the first one looks too background-less and the second one doesn't look strong enough, I decided to merge both skecthes I made into one piece of artwork. Surprisingly, it turns out really good! At this point, I think I like my movement exercise more than my repetition.

fig 4.11 movement final result

Anyway, I am using my very old gouache watercolour set for both drawings. I have zero experience in watercolour so please excuse my amateur work. Will always try my best though!

fig 4.12 behind the sketches

Also, let me introduce you to my one and only frayed paint brush. It is so hard to create details using this  and not gonna lie I almost cried due to the number of times I have ruined my own sketches.

Exercise 4: Harmony and Unity

I had hard time trying to understand the differences in making an artwork that shows harmony and one that shows unity. I know that both have different definitions but I think they are strongly related to each other.

Harmony

I cannot seem to find many harmony artworks on Pinterest that I like.
fig 5.1 visual research

I used the second one as my reference (only the boxes though).

fig 5.8 scanned version of harmony

I really like the hearts! As you have seen from figure 3.13 I am currently obsessed with this kind of shapes so I decided to make another one. At first, I regretted the colour palette that I have chosen. But then, I realize that Van Gogh uses a lot of these colours in his works. Well, I no longer hate it hahhaha.

Unity

I found some really interesting artworks for unity, but because I worked a bit too long on harmony, I only got 15 minutes left to do this one.

fig 5.9 visual research for unity

I decided to recreate the flowers one since I don't think I can do the other or come up with a new idea in a very limited time. Also, I remembered a lecturer from my other module told me that one way to practice and improve is through recreating other works and see what we can do about it, so this is what I did!

fig 5.10 progress (1)

fig 5.11 progress (2)

fig 5.12 final work for unity

Again, I feel like I am always so fucked up doing all the exercises for this module. In fact, I cannot paint at all but these exercises kept on making me feel like I cannot even draw. Looking back, I really want to redo the exercises if it is possible. Dr. Charles has given me lots of opportunities to improve my skills but I took it for granted. Should have probably start earlier for future exercises so I can provide better work.

Exercise 5: Symbol, Imagery and Typography

We are finally allowed to use any kind of medium that we would like to for these exercises so I am really excited! First part of the exercise, we are assigned to design an arbitary symbol. Based on my understanding, arbitary symbols are simple signs that can be logically unrelated to the visual of that being but have a strong concept that we have to learn to understand what is the fuction for daily basis.

Symbol

fig 6.1 visual research for arbitary symbols

I was really stressed out trying to come up with a symbol that has not yet existed, suddenly I feel like I see symbols everywhere even on my laptop keyboard and blogger screen when I am writing this. I just realized how powerful they are and how amazing our brain is that we understand how all these symbols work. In fact, symbols have made our life much easier.

fig 6.2 my sketches

At first, I was just sketching out random shapes and then I got this idea. I wanted to create something that can make a change, to help our environment. What about a symbol to reduce the use of plastics? I am imagining this symbol to appear on online marketplaces because I realize that online shopping has grown so much since the pandemic and the use of plastics on this are in fact, increasing very wildly. By clicking on this icon, customers can inform seller that they are okay with less plastics used for their package. For instance, seller can put all ordered products in one plastic instead of one for each. Besides, it can also be used for online food delivery services to not give any additional plastic bag and cutlery for those who decided to not having them. I have experienced this so many times that the restaurant I ordered from delivered so many unnecesary plastic cutleries which will only be a waste at the end of the day.

Back to the design, I started illustrating it in Adobe Illustrator and decided to use the minus symbol instead of cross.

fig 6.3 Illustrating it in Adobe Illustrator

I also tried to apply different colours to it.

Imagery and Typography

For the second part of the exercise, I decided to use this picture I took a while ago. It was a beautiful scenery of Mount Batur that is located in Kintamani, Bali, Indonesia.

fig 6.8 turning it into a night scene

fig 6.9 adding a starry sky details

After I am satisfied with the image result, I added handwritten texts to it. I did this on my phone using my finger and I am feeling so numb now but it is totally worth it. I have always loved handwritten text more than anything else because it feels very sincere to me. The words are originally lyrics from one of my favourite song, Yellow by Coldplay. I am a big fan of stars, I can stare at them for hours. I had a memorable stargazing moment with my best friend so the starry skies always remind me of him.

fig 6.10 typography attempts

I actually like the second one the most but I think it might be too simple for this exercise so I will go with the last one for my final.

In week 6, Mr. Charles said that he prefer us to create a collage work from magazine cut-out or found objects for the Imagery and Typography exercise.

Since I have always kept my flight and entrance tickets from each places I went in a safe place, I got this idea of making a collage of them.
