INSTRUCTIONS

PRACTICAL

Finally, we are onto task 3. This task is still a continuation from the previous tasks. We have to start working on the text and visual formatting for our book based on the exercises that we had. First and foremost, we have to come up with 3 different grid systems that we might be applying into our book design. I am using the van de graff margins for the first grid system and I kinda like it.

#Grid System 1
Margins: 27mm (top), 51mm (bottom), 22mm (inside), 43mm (outside)
Columns: 2 (5mm gutter)
Rows: 4 (5mm gutter)

#Grid System 2
Margins: 32mm (top), 32mm (bottom), 22mm (inside), 43mm (outside)
Columns: 3 (5mm gutter)
Rows: 5 (5mm gutter)

#Grid System 3
Margins: 42mm (top), 22mm (bottom), 42mm (inside), 22mm (outside)
Columns: 3 (5mm gutter)
Rows: 3 (5mm gutter)

After confirming of using the first grid system, we have to specify the typefaces that we want to use next. Mr. Vinod didn't recommend to use two serif typefaces in one design so here are my type choices:

#Type Specimen 1
Heading: ITC Garamond Std Bold, 44pt
Body text: Avenir Book, 10pt
Subtext: ITC Garamond Std Book, 9pt
Pullqoute: Avenir Oblique, 15pt

#Type Specimen 2
Heading: Univers LT Std 65 Bold, 44pt
Body text: Times Regular, 10pt
Subtext: Univers LT Std 55 Roman, 9pt
Pullqoute: Times Italic, 15pt

#Type Specimen 3
Heading: Myanmar MN Bold, 35pt
Body text: ITC Garamond Std Book, 11pt
Subtext: Avenir Medium Oblique, 8pt
Pullqoute: Avenir Oblique, 14pt

#Type Specimen 4
Heading: Vi Thuy Tien Normal, 44pt
Body text: Montserrat Regular, 10pt
Subtext: Montserrat Light Italic, 9pt
Pullqoute: Avenir Black, 15pt

I want to apply a serif typeface for the body text because I think my illustrations are already very simple with not many colours being used. Also, I would like to make my heading slightly pop so the best option might be the third specimen.

fig 1.3 layouting attempt & progress 17/5/22

Actually, layouting all these texts and visuals didn't take me a lot of time compared to when I have to write and illustrate the contents. I had no issue applying the knowledge I have gained from the form and movement exercise to come up with different kind of placement for each spread until I reached the last 3 pages. I have to make sure that I have the appropriate amount of text to present on the last page but also maintain the balance for the page before it. I also realize that I don't have any other visual left except for the butterfly illustration which means I have to think of a way to make use of it in 2 different spreads.

Until a lot of debating session with myself, here is my final layout thumbnails:

For the flipbook, I first tried to create one on issuu.com but turns out I have to pay to embed it on my blog so here is the link to it instead:

And here is another flipbook that I created from fliphtml5.com:

fig 1.32 flipbook.html 8/6/22

Last but not least, we have to print the actual book, saddle-stitched. Mr. Vinod reminded to use a thicker material for both of the covers so these are what I proceed with:

Front & Back Cover
: 160gsm Ivory Paper
Inside Pages
: 120gsm Ivory Paper

The printing process took less than 4 hours, it was really expensive so I had a high expectation which I should not. The overall binding is asymmetrical, they literally cut more portions than they should have. The ping pong illustration is one of my favourite and they just recklessly cut some parts of the racket out like it doesn't hurt. At least the quality of the printing is acceptable, they managed to use the right colour profile. I have a lot of experiences in the printing field because I have a small business where I basically print stuffs. If only I am currently still in my hometown, I might be producing the book on my own.

After reading the printed book, I notice some mispelling on my writings which I didn't when I was reading it on screen. I did read it twice before proceeding the printing but it was fine. Also, I realize that the font size can actually be minimized because it looks a lot bigger on paper which makes it feel like a book for kids.

FEEDBACK

Week 6:

Labor Day Holiday

Week 7:

General Feedback

Pay attention to the line length, refer back to the typography lectures for the appropriate amount of characters that should be in one row. Using two serif typefaces in one design is not recommended.

Specific Feedback

No specific feedback given because I was joining with my phone that I cannot show my work.

Week 8:

Independent Learning Week

Week 9:

General Feedback

The text for all pages should always start from the same height, be consistent on the alignment.

Specific Feedback

No specific feedback given, Mr. Vinod sent me to a breakout room with Dorcas so she can guide me on exporting the thumbnails.

REFLECTION

I feel like I am really far behind everyone in this module due to the many external issues I have been facing since I first arrived in Malaysia. I don't know why things kept on happening during Mr. Vinod's class, like only during his class. One time I got disconnected in the middle of the class, next the electricity in my apartment was shut down while my laptop ran out of battery, then the wifi in my apartment went under maintenance. These happened every Wednesday where I am supposed to have my Publishing class. I messaged my landlord several times during each and he convinced me that the issue will be fixed before 2 PM so I'll have no problem atending my classes but guess what it was all a lie. In conclusion, the number of time I have to text Mr. Vinod and apologize is excessive, and it felt illegal.

Despite of all that, I am glad that I am still able to catch up with the deadline of this task. The most difficult part when doing the entire layout is actually seeing where the guides and baseline grids are because my laptop LCD is really really broken. My screen got lines all over which hurt my eyes, it was also one of the reason why my work phase is slower than others.

fig 2.1 layouting from my point of view

Overall, I'm quite happy with the final outcome. It feels surreal that I actually made a book with 100% content that came from me. I realize that all the exercises Mr. Vinod has been giving from week 1 is really helpful for us to make this task happen. Despite of his moodswings, Mr. Vinod is one of the lecturer that I look up to. He is always very hard on us so we can prepare for the real world and I am absolutely grateful for that.

I am actually wondering if I can really publish and sell my book since I made the entire content myself from the writing, illustrating to layouting so I searched for an article about it. The author elaborated a complete step-by-step on publishing a book. This article also explain the differences between self-publishing and traditional publishing as well as the strengths and weaknesses for each.
