Task 2: Content Generation

1.1 Content Formation

All the tasks in this module are basically continuous. Below is my content that has been formatted from Task 1, with highlights on the parts that I want to visualize.

1.2 Visual Research

#1 Naela Ali

When thinking of illustrating a book, it quickly reminds me of this book that I own. This book is written and illustrated by an Indonesian author and illustrator, Naela Ali. I admire her artwork, she is so good at watercolour.

#2 Jisoupy

I also LOVE these illustrations by @Jisoupy from Instagram. I really like these kinds of illustration style, the one that looks effortlessly hand-drawn. I feel like it gives more meaning compared to vector (neat) illustrations.

1.3 Content Visualization

#1st Visual Attempt

Below are my firsts attempt inspired by Naela Ali's illustrations.

fig 1.2.1 10/4/22
"Sometimes I feel like I just want to pack my things an run away."

fig 1.2.2 10/4/22
"It pissed me off so I accidentally drop the plate and broke it."

#2nd Visual Attempt

I feel like the colours I used in my 1st attempt are too dull, also the art style is going to take me a lot of time to finish the entire visuals so here I come up with new ones.

fig 1.2.3 19/4/22
"Sometimes I feel like I just want to pack my things an run away."

fig 1.2.4 19/4/22
"They do not know the thoughts that haunt you at night,
the pain you hide behind your smiles and the burdens you carry around unsolved."

fig 1.2.5 19/4/22
"Caterpillars do not need anyone to take care of them because
they have got themselves, and we should too."

fig 1.2.6 19/4/22
"After a whole day of interacting with people, sometimes I find myself being socially drained, where
self-recharging became essential."

fig 1.2.7 19/4/22
"Well my mom is not just a mother to me, she is my idol, my best friend, my partner in crime and I adore her so much."

fig 1.2.8 19/4/22
"It pissed me off so I accidentally drop the plate and broke it."

fig 1.2.9 19/4/22
"We choose whether to wake up in the morning or go back to sleep, we choose which song to
skip and which to add into our playlist, we choose either to close our eyes or to continue watching one more episode of our favourite tv show."

fig 1.2.10 26/4/22
"Not fully living in the present is like being stucked inside a chrysalis."

fig 1.2.11 26/4/22
"When I was writing this book in a public bench at 10 PM, a girl asked if I can watch her wallet while she goes for a run."

fig 1.2.12 26/4/22
"Butterflies take time to grow and develop their wings,
they do not just born and able to fly."

#3rd Visual Attempt

I really like some of my visuals from my 2nd attempt, but I don't think the overall look "good enough". Next are my 3rd attempt as well as the ones that I decided to use for my book. This was my first time using a very limited colour palette for illustrating but I enjoyed the process and quite satisfied with how all the visuals turn out.

fig 1.2.13 1/5/22
"I pour them into writings"

fig 1.2.14 1/5/22
"Sometimes I feel like I just want to pack my things an run away."

fig 1.2.15 1/5/22
"They do not know the thoughts that haunt you at night,

FEEDBACK

Week 2: If you don't think you can come up with good illustrations in a very short time, I suggest not to choose doing Illustrations. Your words have to be at least 3000 words because it will be divided to at least 3 chapters. Create 3 subtexts for each chapter.

Week 3: Try to create variations in your visuals, apply different angles and point of view.

Week 4: No feedback given.

Week 5: So far the visuals are fine,
I like the one with face.

REFLECTION

I enjoyed writing the 3000 words because one of my 2022 new year's resolution is actually to start a writing habit. In primary school, I got an honorable mention on a pantun that I wrote. In highschool, I wrote a lot of poems during class time because I'm not interested in neither science nor math. Literature will always hold a special spot in my heart, if I'm not pursuing the designer path I'd like to be a writer. I was writing each chapter in different places to refresh my mind, one in my bedroom, one in an airplane and the other one in the park. When the writing phase feels therapeutic to me, illustrating the visuals balanced it out with the stress it gave. I overthink a lot trying to visualize my own words, I fear that I won't be able to produce illustrations that satisfy myself. Seeing my classmates' visuals also made me feel insecure because most of them are doing abstract looking art style which makes them appear like they have more to tell compared to my straight-to-the-point illustrations. I can make it like that if I want to but it just doesn't feel like me. Since I'm writing the book myself, I want to express the visuals in my way as well. I decided to redo all my illustrations 2 days before the submission date which I know is very reckless but I managed to catch up anyway so cheers! Mr. Vinod has never seen my final illustrations yet, I really hope he thinks I'm making the right decision.

It was very confusing to me when Mr. Vinod told us to write 3 subtexts and 1 pull-quote for each chapter like what are these things? I have no idea. I searched for an English article but I still can't understand the context so I have to find another one that is written in Indonesian.
