Task 2: Key Artwork & Collateral

INSTRUCTIONS

PRACTICAL

1. Task 2A: Key Artwork

We are assigned to create a logo that can also work as a key artwork based on our own initial(s). I think this task is pretty interesting since we all most likely come up with different things eventually. My initials are "W" and "S" so I did some sketches experimenting on some shapes that I can form from these two letters.

After seeing our progress on week 6, Mr. Vinod reminded us that our key artwork should represent ourselves, something that we might do if we are not designers. I did not pay attention to this previously so I guess I am kinda at the edge now.

To be honest, I am not sure what am I going to do though. I am currently side-hustling as a video creator and small business owner, but I feel like I also want to do something else.

Looking back at my designs, I have to pick one to finalize and use it for the rest of the task. The first one is my favourite, I like simplicity and minimalism. It just somehow feel visually pleasing and comfortable. I think it can work for something related to clothing, technology or even food. The second one I am not sure though so we can just eliminate it right away. Well, I like it too but not as much as the others. The third one is really interesting, I feel like it is a brilliant way to form the letter "W". However, if I am not a designer, I would not be a serpent as well sooooo nope. The fourth and fifth are for cat cafes, I am so excited for these ones since I love cats and owning a cafe is something that a younger me has always dreamt of. Yup, she played almost all of the existing cafe simulation games and dedicated her time to it as it is a full time job. The last one kept remind me of "Adidas", but the women version. Hmm, shall we call it "Wadidas" instead?

I finally decided to continue working with my first key artwork.

2. Task 2B: Collateral

In the next part of the exercise, we are assigned to design a poster and some collaterals based on the key artwork we have created. We are given our freedom to decide what the poster is about, the colour and font used, and everything in between. This way we are able to explore various possibilities and experiment on different ideas. But turns out it is actually harder to come up with one thing when there is no limited options.

These are the first two posters I attempted on creating, the first one is just for fun anyway. Only potterheads can understand the context and if you are not one, you are free to close the tab and exit this page immediately.

I am so obsessed with the colour combination of blue and yellow, it looks really nice and positive. Furthermore, I think I will keep working on the second one but with a thrift event instead of garage sale. I have been really into thrifting for the last couple of months, it is one way to contribute on saving the environment. Buying second-hand clothes helps to prevent the massive waste of energy and resources on the production of new clothes. We can also find unique clothing pieces through thrifting so no need to worry about other people wearing the same clothes anymore.

Holding an environmentally friendly event is definitely something that I would do, I have always imagined of owning a thrift store and donating some of the profits to animal welvares. This way we are not only saving the planet but provide a better home for its beings. Moreover, I decided to design a poster about a "Thrift Week".

My right and left brains are having a fight asumming wether putting the "One of a Kind" on the poster creates balance or just making it looks crowded. But then I decided to not put it so here is the final poster design.

Moving on, we are told to create 2-3 collaterals.

I think I am going to add more mock ups later because these two are too simple. And nah, a t-shirt as a collateral for this event is not suitable since we do not support fast fashion.

Lastly, we have to create an animated invitation.

FEEDBACK

Here is the summarize feedback I received from each week.

Week 6:
General Feedback
The key artwork has to represent an occupation, what would you do if you are not a designer?

Week 7:
Specific Feedback
This is too simple, you have to play around and experiment more not only putting the key artwork this large in the center of the poster. The key artwork can just be placed smaller on the side.

Week 8:
Independent Learning Week

Week 9:
Specific Feedback
Good work. Good key art, simple and effective. The poster exploration was good but I feel you could have explored the use of your key art in the background a little more imaginatively. The colour scheme is good. But overall I think you have done relative well in the invite esp.

REFLECTION

This task is pretty challenging and I do not realize that we have come this far so quickly. Looking back at our first task in Typography to where we are now, I cannot believe how much we have learnt from the module itself. I am still not that familiar with Adobe Illustrator yet though, I feel like the lack of knowledge on the tools and interface makes me unable to create something new. I really want to do the collaterals again if there is more time because I have a lot of ideas in mind but still figuring out how to deliver it.
